SMTP not working but POP inbound is fine - no changes made, what's up please?

Hi lovely people

Using Win10 with Windows Mail 2012

Pop inbound and SMTP outbound.

Happy user for.... a loooong time

I've made no changes to my PC, from it working fine, but last night my SMTP outbound email failed with a request for my username and password.

Worried I'd been hacked, I logged into Webmail and all was well. I changed my password for personal confidence and logged out, and back into Webmail to check it was OK. It was.

Changed the password in Windows Mail 2012 and email inbound worked (tested) but still cant send

Port is 465, and I have it set to use same username and password as incoming email.

I left it until today incase Virgin had a short term issue but it's still failing.

So I deleted that mail account in Windows Mail 2012 then Re created it in Windows Mail 2012 again. Incoming ok. Outbound .. errors on what seems to be user name and password. Same pop up box.

Any idea if there's a server error anywhere please? Thank you for any help.

GreatMarko

It's an ongoing fault - please see the numerous other threads on this in the forum - plus VM's Service Status page: https://my.virginmedia.com/faults/service-status

Thanks for replying so fast.

I checked my Status page but it said I had no issues with the broadband package ( that I don't have)

So I signed up to ask instead. Thank you for your patience with my request. I didn't know there WAS a community until i finally gave up searching the VM main pages.

I'll await a fix then

If you don't have a VM broadband package then you may still have problems with your email once this smtp issue is sorted out.  A VM broadband account is a requirement for use of a vm email account.  Email accounts should be closed 90 days after a customer leaves, but in some cases these have remained open.  Eventually they get wiped out in periodic clean ups.

So if this is the case with your email now would be a good time to set up another email address and inform all your contacts.

Re: SMTP not working but POP inbound is fine - no changes made, what's up please?

Wow.... please see my reply to KeithN at http://community.virginmedia.com/t5/Email-Cloud-and-webspace/Virgin-net-smtp-password/m-p/3072825/hi... : copied here in italics

Sounds like the same problem I've been grappling with ALL AFTERNOON - after many months of normal operation (using Outlook 2007) out of the blue whenever SENDING an email (receiving is normal) I suddenly get an Enter Network Password popup which won't accept any of my (verified) details accompanied by an error message "Sending' reported error (0x800CCC92) : 'Your e-mail server rejected your login. Verify your user name and password in your account properties."

In fact the popup self-replicates frequently even when I have nothing in the Outbox!? A REAL PAIN.

Could it be a coincidence that only yesterday I received notice of yet another transfer - having been sold by Virgin to TalkTalk last year I've now been sold by TT to Fleur Telecom, all the while retaining my virgin.net username and password for my SMTP outgoing mail. Both Fleur and TT maintain this problem is 'nothing to do with them as they haven't changed anything' - but nor have I. So the signs are pointing to a Virgin malfunction / cockup, which I need to get sorted QUICKLY. Any advice who to call or what to do?

Maybe my VM email address just got deleted thus poleaxing my SMTP access? But I've had a Onetel email for YEARS after ending with them, and no notice from VM that thay had any intention of a 'clearout'. They sold me to TalkTalk about this time last year. But when going to my VM account the VM email address is still there, so surely they wouldn't axe it in the system but leave it on my account details - would they???

I'm getting the feeling this requires a phonecall to the relevant VM Tech guys asap... anyone got a number and hopefully a name?

If that's what's

@ensher  It doesn't help posting across numerous threads with the same issue.  If you want to ring in: The numbers to ring are 150 free from a VM mobile or landline, or 0345 454 1111 from any other phone (chargeable as standard UK landline phone no.).

Together with another Superuser I have been seeking clarification behind the scenes since yesterday to try and find out what is happening with virgin.net accounts at the moment.  Unfortunately our requests have been met with silence.

Re: SMTP not working but POP inbound is fine - no changes made, what's up please?

I've got the identical problem on my virgin.net email. Been working fine for years. Yesterday unable to send emails.  Password correct as checked accessing account through web browser. Googled for a fix and tried resetting my password, with the same password, but still not working.

Error response below

Unable to send or receive messages for the Virgin (----------.---------) account. Windows Live Mail couldn't log on to the email server using secure password authentication. Contact your email provider and verify that it supports secure password authentication. To change this logon setting, in the folder list, right-click on the account name, and then click Properties on the shortcut menu. In the Properties dialog, click the Servers tab, and then under Incoming Mail Server, select a logon option.

Server Error: 0x800CCC90
Server Response: -ERR Protocol error.
Server: 'pop.virgin.net'
Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x800CCC18
Protocol: POP3
Port: 110
Secure(SSL): No

Re: SMTP not working but POP inbound is fine - no changes made, what's up please?

Same issue for me also. Last night my blueyonder.co.uk account stopped working with invalid ID or password issues. It started working again at 6.00pm today but then my virginmedia.com email account stopped working and is still out.

ive had issues like this for 2 weeks on and off so it's not just today and yesterday.

Poor service

There are issues with the sending (smtp) servers at present.  However, the error message you have posted highlights a couple of issues re your account settings.

VM mail does not support 'secure password authentication' so you need to uncheck that setting in wlm.  Also the pop3 port should be 995 with ssl on.

There maybe another issue involved here as well.  Do you have a current VM broadband cable account or does your virgin.net address date back to the dial up days or from an adsl connection?

Dial up accounts should have been closed some time ago and adsl accounts were sold to Talk Talk last year, with a 12 month grace period for continued use of VM email services.  That 12 months expires around now.

Re: SMTP not working but POP inbound is fine - no changes made, what's up please?

Same problem here for the last 3 days.

Receiving email to my virginmedia email account, but anything I send is not being sent.
I even tested this by sending a TEST email to myself.

It's been almost 3 days now and I have IMPORTANT email that needs to be sent ASAP!
