Hi<
Not changed any settings my end. I used MailSpring client without any difficulties then started to get error messages referring to SMTP.
Deleted it, reinstalled using the password i have always used and am getting the following:
'authentication error -check you user name and password(SMTP)'
I installed Thunderbird - I can receive emails but i can't send them - receiving error messages about SMTP password failed and log in to SMTP server failed.
If i log into my account on the Virgin media website with my password, everything acts as it should and i can send / receive as normal.
I have checked and doubled checked my password and its correct. Its working on the website but not the email clients for SMTP only. I have checked the server details and they are correct.
any ideas please ?

In Thunderbird press Ctrl + Shift + J to show error console and review the log output for SMTP error information, i.e. VM error code:

Hi there, thanks for looking at this
i've followed your instructions and cannot find the part you have highlighted.
I can't find anything relating to SMTP in any of the tabs on the error console.

Have you tried sending an email?

If this does not work then open a Command Shell window and enter the following where username:password is replaced with your email address and password, i.e. richard.branson@virginmedia.com:Y54kpX5g:
curl -v smtps://smtp.virginmedia.com -u username:password
Do not post the resulting output here but instead review it for possible reported causes and then post just the redacted part here or the VM error code.

yes this is where the problem is. I can receive emails as normal. When sending i get the SMTP error message relating to password error.

You will also need to take steps to identify which device on your network is sending the rogue smtp traffic that caused the listing. Possible culprits are firesticks or similar devices which have had non standard alterations made to the them or use of the Hola so called free VPN.
