Using thunderbird I use one of my plusnet email accounts  to send to gmail. All emails from this account to any gmail account is rejected though it was working last week. My other plusnet email works fine as do my other virgin accounts. (They all use the same smtp settings)

You will need to take this up with Plusnet as neither they nor Gmail are connected to Virgin Media.

You should not be using the VM SMTP server to send Plusnet emails.  You need to use the relevant Plusnet SMTP server.
