Thunderbird not sending emails.

Yep, me too!
I've tried making sense of the various 'help' threads, but still can't solve it.
I can receive, but not send.
Sending gives me...
"Login to server smtp.virginmedia.com with username xxxx.xxxxx@blueyonder.co.uk failed"

Where do I go from here?

Re: Thunderbird not sending emails.

Hello
Thank for joining in on the forum, we will try the best to get your issue resolved.

First I would suggest to following to find the error that you are getting on your email client :- Look here to get the error logs:- https://community.virginmedia.com/t5/Email/Outgoing-Authentication-Issues-Check-Email-Logs/td-p/3237..., if you do have an VM305 error then more than likely the spambot was asleep as spamhaus will automatically remove after 2 days of no spam activity, if error then follow :- https://community.virginmedia.com/t5/Security-matters/Searching-for-Spambots-on-your-network/td-p/40...

You can check your listing yourself but there is no point requesting removal until you have found and deleted the spambot. https://www.spamhaus.org/query and type in your external IP you can gets this my typing "whats my ip" into google.

If you are running Hola VPN Free, then note But Hola Free VPN is anything but a VPN.

Regards Mike

Re: Thunderbird not sending emails.

I 'think' I may have solved it!

Installed Wireshark and telnet on a spare new laptop, the only PC think I have with WIFI (my other 2 desktops are both ethernet fed).
Ran Wireshark, and immediately picked up activity on port 25.

Cross checked the IP address with my router and found it’s actually the laptop I’m using…**bleep**!!!!!!😐

I’ve not had it long, and only just installed windows 10 on, but it had no other antivirus on it, so installed AVG Free and Malwarebytes.
Made no difference.

Then found this video, and blocked port 25 in the outgoing Firewall…
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xNojalmpUNU

So, running the telnet smtp.blueyonder.co.uk 25 test again now says the 'connection to host lost'.
So I presume this is the firewall doing its thing?

Fingers crossed, it seems to be working and Wireshark isn't picking anything else up.

But why is it tis machine though, out of the 20 other devices in the house why is it this laptop that’s had a brand new install?

Re: Thunderbird not sending emails.

Did you run logging on Thunderbird and what results did you get?

Have you checked that you are using SSL/TLS and the correct ports with Thunderbird?

POP Access (Incoming)

  • Server Name: pop3.virginmedia.com
  • User Name: Your full email address e.g. Richard.Branson@ntlworld.com
  • Connection Security: SSL/TLS
  • Authentication: Normal password
  • Port: 995

Or

IMAP Access (Incoming)

  • Server Name: imap.virginmedia.com
  • User Name: Your full email address e.g. Richard.Branson@ntlworld.com
  • Connection Security: SSL/TLS
  • Authentication method: Normal password
  • Port: 993

Outgoing Server (SMTP)

  • Server Name: smtp.virginmedia.com
  • Connection security: SSL/TLS
  • Authentication method: Normal password
  • User Name: Your full email address e.g. Richard.Branson@ntlworld.com
  • Port: 465

Out of curiosity, what was the destination IP Address of the network traffic directed at port 25?

Made no difference.

Default install include Microsoft Defender. What additional software did you install and might that explain the spambot activity?

Yes the firewall is blocking outgoing traffic but you really do need to the tackle its source and monitor the situation.

Re: Thunderbird not sending emails.

I've now installed a new ssd in the laptop and reintsalled windows - so NO port blocking is enabled now.

Out of curiosity, what was the destination IP Address of the network traffic directed at port 25?

Source and destination is showing as 62.254.26.220 and 192.168.0.XXX - they both keep switching between these 2.
Do these IP's have anything to do with 'telnet smpt.blueyonder.co.uk 25' test I ran on the laptop prior to Wireshark?

I've restarted WireShark and run 'tcp port 25' on my wireless channel, as before, but nothing is being picked up so far.

Default install include Microsoft Defender. What additional software did you install and might that explain the spambot activity?
Absolutle default install, no aditional software added or installed.

Yes the firewall is blocking outgoing traffic but you really do need to the tackle its source and monitor the situation.
BUT, Windows has been installed from a borrowed 'cracked' dvd - so could this be the problem?

Yes, nslookup smpt.blueyonder.co.uk returns an IP Address of 62.254.26.220

Absolutle default install, no aditional software added or installed.

Were it not for what follow later I would have said, "That makes it extremely likely the source of the spambot activity is elsewhere within your local network."

Yes –given you can have no idea of what was modified–

FYI, All the Ways You Can Still Upgrade to Windows 10 for Free. Also, if there is no specialist Windows only software requirements consider trying one of the many open source operating system offerings.

Re: Thunderbird not sending emails.

Thanks,

So in summary, my dodgey Windows install looks like it could be the culprit.
But, when I said it was the new laptop that was coming up in Wireshark, this was probably only the results of the 'telnet' test.
And the laptop has been running Wireshark for a few hours now and nothing else has been picked up - so I'm no closer to actually finding out what device is triggering the spam.
Having said that though my son isn't in, so none of the 4/5 devices he has are turned on .
So I'll stick with Wireshark for a few more days and try and find out what machine is having the problem.
