Spam - VM's filter is useless!

I'm so sick & tired of VM's utterly useless Spam filter! VM is happy to allow any messages about Viagra, Bitcoin scams, phishing attacks through, but blocks many real e-mails! I've had 20 scam e-mails in the last 3 days trying to get me to renew Norton anti-virus (which I don't have). I mark them as Spam each time, but the system never learns!

As I said the system also blocks proper e-mails sometimes - e-mails from a Dutch company I deal with are always blocked, no matter how many times I mark them as not Spam. I even had an individual e-mail from a UK company acknowledging an order classed as spam.

Its useless, and its always been useless, and it never gets better! I wouldn't mind if the system ever learnt - isn't that what modern sophisticated systems are supposed to do???

From 7.30 tonight I've had 538 more !

I have a lot of blacklists setup, but recently in the last 2 days I have been hit with roughly 30 spam messages, nothing compared to other people.  As far as Im concerned this happened after VM were breached and details were leaked.

Im getting spam from ewboutside nzfitness cmu.edu xxwbuiseness osuginous

I'm just getting a dribble of daft Bit-coin scams now, plus a fake 'You are eligible for an ebay reward'  message, that I haven't seen before.

Hi boothy99

Thanks for the tip.  I’ve just given it a go and no sooner than I finished, another 4 new spam emails come in!  Aaaargh!

I’ve had my ntlworld email address for donkey’s years and it’s only in the past week or so that I’ve started getting a crazy amount of spam.  What makes it all the more annoying is that it’s not an address I use very often.

Anyway, is idea to open each new spam email to get the email address add them to the ones you said to cut and paste?

As I said in my earlier post my Gmail account that feeds off my Virgin accounts manages to block these emails so Virgin should probably look at how Google are doing it 😠

Hi @Baz8755

Please forgive my ignorance but have you set up a gmail account using with your Virgin email?

If so, I’ll do that as agree, Gmail do a very good job of identifying spam.

@DeeEmbee

Yep

I did it years ago so can't remember the exact steps I used. However checking my virgin account I can see a rule that says to forward email to my gmail

If this situation carries on I may start "Washing" all my Virgin email accounts by forwarding them onto gmail accounts and forwarding them back as you can set the forwarding up to delete the message after it has been forwarded

@Baz8755

Thank you!  This sounds like the best plan - I’ll have a look and see what I need to do.

I was told that Virgin used to use Google's spam filter, which was very effective, and then changed to their own which has never ever worked properly.

Virgin's mail system used to use Google, yes, and it was much better (both in spam filtering and usability).  Since they migrated it's been like the hubs - tick all the boxes on paper but not much good in real life.  I'm sure they've got reasons for changing the mail system, but since then I've migrated all of my accounts off VM, and the only legitimate emails I get on it are from Virgin.  However, so much spam is now getting through that it's not worth checking for legitimate mails.
