SCAM emails

Is there a way to find out if my email account has been hacked or if my emails have been intercepted through my account?

I would have more confidence in Virgin Media's advice if it included some way to review historical connection / sign in history; auto-forward and filter rules are not the only way to extract data from a compromised email account.
