I eventually got through to someone at VM on the phone (150) and rather oddly, had to have my password reset - although the account hadn't been hacked and the account was still active. This 'mailbox unavailable' error appears to be happening to other ntlworld or legacy accounts and apparently can only be fixed by VM advisors resetting the password.
