@nlav The servers ending in virginmedia.com will accept logins for all four Virginmedia domains, and have in fact done so since before Virgin Media took the email service in house.

However the other servers ending in.

ntlworld.com
blueyonder.co.uk
virgin.net

Will only accept logins from email addresses that end in the same domain.

As someone with an @ntlworld address unfortunately neither the ntlworld nor the virginmedia smtp server currently works for me.

Ah - at last some emails have been sent from my outbox. Fingers crossed that VM might have fixed the server problem?

@Jen_A is advising now that the server in question is now fixed and it was indeed one of the background relays.  Not the foreground server being connected to.

If you are not using smtp.virginmedia.com for outgoing or you changed away to send mail, you should now revert to the correct settings as listed here:

It's not the same problem.

The error code returned from the server (530) and the Microsoft Error code (0x800CCC78)  Both mean the same thing.  I'm going to assume that the smtp.virgin.com is a typo, as you wouldn't have gotten either of those errors had you really been trying to connect to smtp.virgin.com

The error codes mean that the smtp server rejected the mail because you don't have "Outgoing Server requires Authentication" ticked in Live Mail.

While you're at it ditch Live Mail anyway, Microsoft no longer support it and have withdrawn the download.  It was part broken as well as the integration with what was formerly known as SkyDrive - renamed to OneDrive after a trademark dispute was broken, which caused issues when trying to send images.  Among other things.

My current favourite free email client is Thunderbird, which, will automatically configure with the correct settings for all VM domains anyway.  Although there are others.

same here suddenly stopped working no changes made:

using apple mail

error message - cannot get mail - username or pw for "account name" is incorrect

outgoing - smtp.blueyonder.co.uk

incoming- imap.blueyonder.co.uk

@blueyonder.co.uk domain

same here....smtp.ntlworld just stopped.  imap ok at present

 

have been using mail on iMac and mail on iPhone
