I’m having the same problem with my blueyonder email address on both my iPad and iPhone.  Tried switching back to blueyonder smtp but still not working.

Sadly all the servers appear to be working for me 😞 I say sadly because not being able to replicate the fault makes it hard to get to the bottom of it.

However I did look record the smtp banners for the successful connections.

smtp.virginmedia.com  - 220 know-smtprelay-9-imp cmsmtp ESMTP server ready
smtp.virgin,net             - 220 know-smtprelay-10-imp cmsmtp ESMTP server ready
smtp.blueyonder.co.uk - 220 know-smtprelay-1-imp cmsmtp ESMTP server ready
smtp.ntlworld.com        - 220 know-smtprelay-10-imp cmsmtp ESMTP server ready

I then connected to the same servers using my OpenVPN server to make it look as if I was connecting from a different IP

smtp.virginmedia.com - 220 know-smtprelay-7-imp cmsmtp ESMTP server ready
smtp.virgin.net             - 220 know-smtprelay-1-imp cmsmtp ESMTP server ready
smtp.blueyonder.co.uk - 220 know-smtprelay-7-imp cmsmtp ESMTP server ready
smtp.ntlworld.com        - 220 know-smtprelay-10-imp cmsmtp ESMTP server ready

This tells me the following.

1, The problem is not with the following servers.

  • smtp.blueyonder.co.uk
  • smtp.virginmedia.com
  • smtp.virgin.net
  • smtp.ntlworld.com

Rather it is a problem with one of the underlying servers that these connect to.

2. At least four of the underlying servers.

  • smtprelay-1
  • smtprelay-7
  • smtprelay-9
  • smtprelay-10

are working, the nature of the way the servers are chosen when the connection is made makes this problem appear intermittent, and also makes it appear that the solution is to change the smtp server to a different one.  However those using virginmedia.com email addresses do not have the option to change, and even for those who are on legacy addresses, the fix is not guaranteed as there is still a possibility the connection will be directed to the underlying server or servers that are broken.

@ModTeam  I'm hoping the information above will prove useful to the email technicians as they work to narrow down the cause of the issue.

I cannot send email. I use eM Client and have an @ntlworld address. I have changed my settings from ntlworld servers to virginmedia servers as per instructions on this website but it has not solved the problem. Look forward to a solution asap!

I have tried loading the account to Windows 10 Mail and I cannot send on that either.

The major fault has now cleared from service status. Wonder what is going on.?

@fitzpanga  What error message did you get when trying to send?  Simply saying I can't send doesn't tell us a lot.  More information is needed.  While I accept there is an intermittent problem, which was why Virgin started this thread, it's not the only reason people might have difficulty sending.

I have the same problem. E-mail client: Thunderbird No error message number Message: connection to outgoing server lost in the middle of the transaction. Outgoing server: smtp.virginmedia.com E-mail domain: ntlworld.com

I don't get an error message - the emails just sit in the outbox and don't get sent.
