Since the other day after Virgin decided to do some updates I now have been unable to access my Ntlworld email through my email client. Virgin have decided to seemingly not tell anyone about the update and I've had to find the new settings out myself.
These work for me, and they are not the same as Virgin gave me:

Good post, although I'm surprised you didn't change the pop3 server name to pop3.virginmedia.com
The servers ending virginmedia.com have accepted connections for all four Virgin email domains for years, In fact I personally would think it would be easier if Virgin retired the legacy proxies completely and simply used the virginmedia.com ones.
However they haven't changed the settings. Although something is clearly going on at Virgin's end as I've seen a number of people report issues connecting.
I don't have an ntlworld or virgin.net account so I can't log in to those servers but I can check that the servers are up.
pop3.ntlworld.com
OpenSSL> s_client -connect pop3.ntlworld.com:995 [SSL connection information removed] +OK Virgin Media POP3 server ready [ e4c558782NTL ]. quit +OK POP3 server signing off.. read:errno=0
imap.ntlworld.com
OpenSSL> s_client -connect imap.ntlworld.com:993 [SSL Connection info removed] --- * OK Virgin Media IMAP4 server ready [ e4c558782NTL ]. ? logout * BYE IMAP4 Proxy logging out. ? OK Logout completed. read:errno=0
smtp.ntlworld.com
OpenSSL> s_client -connect smtp.ntlworld.com:465 [SSL connection info removed] --- 220 know-smtprelay-8-imp bizsmtp ESMTP server ready quit 221 know-smtprelay-8-imp bizsmtp closing connection read:errno=0
So for me they are all working. I've also seen a blueyonder user report connection problems, but I use the blueyonder servers myself with no issue.
I've raised the connection issues with Virgin and they are looking at it.

Hi Ravenstar,
If I change the pop setting to virginmail.com it no longer works - tested on outlook and windows live mail. I think it has to be changed to pop3.virginmail.com to make it work.

And If I ping the Ntlworld servers (smtp and imap) I get no response, but I do get one from the pop server.

I hope that's a typo and you meant pop3.virginmedia.com
OpenSSL> s_client -connect pop3.virginmedia.com:995 [SSL Connection info removed] --- +OK Virgin Media POP3 server ready [ e4c558782VM ]. user my.address@blueyonder.co.uk +OK pass password +OK Logged in. quit +OK Logging out. read:errno=0
As you can see working for me and allowing my blueyonder login. (Note login info changed)

Can you post a tracert to the smtp and IMAP servers?

Strange as I have been having issues since saturday from my location (Lincoln LN2) with the smtp.virginmedia.com server timing out so was advised by support to change to smtp.ntlworld.com which connects ok. Ping, Traceroute etc tests fail to reach smtp.virginmedia.com. The complete opposite of what you are having.
How about a decent clear explanation from VM of whats going on?????

Which is what I've been seeing in several threads. Different servers affected for different people with the same connection issues yet others can use the same servers.
I raised the issue with Virgin yesterday and they are looking into it.

I've been getting the same problem since around September 2nd i.e. my emails not downloading to Mozilla Thunderbird. I've checked my settings and they look fine.
Let me know if you need any of my details to set up a ticket. I'm based in Stafford if that's any help.
Thanks
