Mail server IP in RBL but I cant see it in RBL lookup

I maintain an email gateway and emails directed to  @blueyonder.co.uk email address are getting blocked with :

to=<xxxxxxxxxxxx@blueyonder.co.uk>, relay=mx.tb.ukmail.iss.as9143.net[212.54.56.11]:25, delay=21318, delays=21318/0/0.04/0, dsn=4.0.0, status=deferred (host mx.tb.ukmail.iss.as9143.net[212.54.56.11] refused to talk to me: 550 mx4.tb.ukmail.iss.as9143.net mx4.tb.ukmail.iss.as9143.net MXIN103 Your IP 194.146.44.102 is in RBL. Please see http://csi.cloudmark.com/reset-request/?ip=194.146.44.102 ;id=04SEkwz5aTACo;sid=04SEkwz5aTACo;mta=mx4.tb;d=20200727;t=165014[CET];ipsrc=194.146.44.102;)

I looked up the IP at https://mxtoolbox.com/SuperTool.aspx?action=blacklist:194.146.44.102&newAppVersion=1  and its not listed.

So, my question is .. "Why is this IP blocked" ???

MXToolbox does not list the IP Address as blocked because it does not query Cloudmark's list.

Cloudmark Sender Intelligence service has determined the IP Address to be suspect. If you believe the determination to be incorrect then make a Statistics Reset Request at http://csi.cloudmark.com/reset-request/?ip=194.146.44.102

Re: Mail server IP in RBL but I cant see it in RBL lookup

http://www.anti-abuse.org/multi-rbl-check-results/?host=194.146.44.102 doesnt list it either and csi.cloudmark.com is listed there. So, it looks like Virginmedia rbl lists are out of date.

Flagged to the forum team as they are best placed to comment on this discrepancy; be aware it can take them a few hours / days to respond.

Re: Mail server IP in RBL but I cant see it in RBL lookup

Most, if not all, email system providers use software products to protect their service(s) against “Spam”. Some of them employ in-house teams to maintain such software whilst others use one of the many specialist providers of such services. Virginmedia’s supplier of such software (and data lists) is Cloudmark.

MxToolbox is an information collector/supplier and provides some free services to individuals as well as professional paid services to others. They currently collate data from approximately 100 blacklists scattered across the globe. Spamhaus is another major presence in this field. Such aggregation of this data is termed “RBL” (Realtime Block List). Cloudmark will, quite rightly, not publicly disclose which data sources they provide and/or check against.

The biggest problem for email providers (and their suppliers) is managing and accessing all of this data at their front-end. You wouldn’t want to connect on-line across the internet to 100+ databases – for every single email received - and ask – “is this IP address in your blacklist?” Obviously not. Everyone utilises local cached copies of all the significant lists at their disposal. Given the rapidity with which these lists are updated, it is very likely that no two cached copies of global lists will ever be absolutely identical for any great length of time. So, if Company A updates their cached lists every hour on the hour but company B only updates at 12 noon and midnight, their lists might only match for 2 hours a day at best.

Where – as in this case - you get an invitation to question the “bounce” with the blacklist source, - Cloudmark, - you should do so. It might just be a minor delay in the update cycle between Cloudmark and VM.

We're still investigating this with our dedicated support teams so don't have an update unfortunately but we'll update the thread when we do 🙂

Thanks,
