If you are accessing your Ntlworld account via VM webmail look for a set of folders headed Gmail. Emails received prior to the switch from the Google app version of VM Mail to the current version were moved to those folders.

I tried that but nothing before 2015. I can't see an archive folder either.

In that case, unless you have an offline backup of those emails they are likely to be lost.
VM do not keep a backup for you, that is up to you to maintain.

I can see the gmail folder but it has only 1 year's messages...upto 2015. Joe

Webmail archiving is a manual process but selected message(s) can be unintentionally archived by pressing 'A' key.
Archived email can be found under Archive folder, as highlighted below:
