Having email problems on MacBook Air in High Sierra

Hi. For the last two weeks, my Mac Mail client on my MBAir has stopped sending and receiving mail, and I don't know quite why.

It reports that the sept.ntlworld.com connection timed out

I tried running connection doctor, it failed on all accounts, here is an example log report

Re: Having email problems on MacBook Air in High Sierra

There are no reference to SMTP there; just IMAP which for unknown reasons using port 143.

FYI: following are the recommended IMAP / SMTP settings:

Receiving mail (IMAP4)
IMAP4 server nameimap.virginmedia.com
IMAP4 SSLEnabled
IMAP4 port993
IMAP4 authenticationEnabled (or 'Password' on Macs)
IMAP4 username

Full email address, e.g., richard.branson@virginmedia.com

Note: If you update your username in My Virgin Media, this email address will not change.

IMAP4 SPA (Secure Password Authentication)Disabled
Sending mail (SMTP)
SMTP server namesmtp.virginmedia.com
SMTP SSLEnabled
SMTP port465
SMTP authenticationEnabled (or 'Password' on Macs)
SMTP username

Full email address, e.g., richard.branson@virginmedia.com

Note: If you update your username in My Virgin Media, this email address will not change.

Re: Having email problems on MacBook Air in High Sierra

Thank you. I did try this, too. The 'Verifying details" part afterwards never stopped...

Re: Having email problems on MacBook Air in High Sierra

To help troubleshoot the issue can you confirm:

  • you are able to sign into webmail
  • what happens when you run the following commands (shown in bold) in a terminal; replace richard.branson@virginmedia.com with your own email address:

    curl -url "smtps://smtp.virginmedia.com" --user "richard.branson@virginmedia.com"
Enter host password for user 'richard.branson@blueyonder.co.uk':
214-2.0.0 This is cmsmtp ESMTP service help
214-2.0.0 To contact postmaster send email to postmaster@virginmedia.com.
214-2.0.0 For local information send email to Postmaster at your site.
214 2.0.0 end of HELP info

    and:

    curl -url "imaps://imap.virginmedia.com/inbox" --user "richard.branson@virginmedia.com"
Enter host password for user 'richard.branson@virginmedia.com':
    * LIST (\HasNoChildren) "/" INBOX

    Do you see similar outputs?

Re: Having email problems on MacBook Air in High Sierra

Thank you once more. Yes, I can sign in to Webmail, using passwords saved in my Keychain (which I'd have otherwise forgotten)

Here is the response to the Terminal commands, with just a return instead of a password

Last login: Sat Oct 12 15:34:37 on console

Williams-MacBook-Air:~ wacooper$ curl -url "smtps://smtp.virginmedia.com" --user "[REMOVED]"

Enter host password for user '[REMOVED]':

curl: (67) Login denied

Williams-MacBook-Air:~ wacooper$ curl -url "imaps://imap.virginmedia.com/inbox" --user "[REMOVED]"

Enter host password for user '[REMOVED]':

curl: (67) Access denied. B

Williams-MacBook-Air:~ wacooper$ * LIST (\HasNoChildren) "/" INBOX

-bash: syntax error near unexpected token `('

Williams-MacBook-Air:~ wacooper$ curl -url "smtps://smtp.virginmedia.com" --user "[REMOVED]"

Enter host password for user '[REMOVED]':

curl: (67) Login denied

Williams-MacBook-Air:~ wacooper$

This morning my email has worked on the main account, but reports the others as 'offline'

Re: Having email problems on MacBook Air in High Sierra

For heavens sake edit out your e-mail address in your last post. This is a public forum and the spammers are waiting to get e-mail addresses they can use.  You have about 30 mins from posting to do this.

Re: Having email problems on MacBook Air in High Sierra

I see the Mods did it. Good thing they were around and looking. It is just common sense not to divulge personal details in any obviously public forum like this one is. Hopefully no harm done. Only wish I could solve your issue but my expertise does not lie with Apple products

Re: Having email problems on MacBook Air in High Sierra

Further, this issue now seems to be an intermittent one; I have received mail today, but the accounts repeatedly return as 'offline' and taking them back on again does not always help. I am beginning to wonder what the issue is, because I do have internet access using the browser.
