For attention of Postmaster: Chessworld.net Emails being blocked

Dear Postmaster

I am webmaster of a correspondence chess site, which is reliant on Emails for move notifications.

Some of my members have complained recently they are not getting Email notifications.

Please would it be possible to Whitelist chessworld.net

An example bounce I get is: to:

postmaster@dedj105

"This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification.

Unable to deliver message to the following recipients, due to being unable to connect successfully to the destination mail server."

Please could Chessworld.net be White listed?

Best wishes

 [REMOVED]

Webmaster, www.Chessworld.net

I think you might want to review your outbound servers mail logs

Looking at the error message:

Unable to deliver message to the following recipients, due to being unable to connect successfully to the destination mail server.

It looks as if the server isn't even getting as far as exchanging email addresses.

Re: For attention of Postmaster: Chessworld.net Emails being blocked

Hi there

Thanks for your reply

Is it not the case that the connection refusal is because Chessworld Emails have been blocked?

If so, how would we go about Whitelisting chessworld@chessworld.net ?

Re: For attention of Postmaster: Chessworld.net Emails being blocked

It is precisely the case that the error message looks like your server is unable to communicate with VM's. You would be better served by asking your e-mail provider (I assume it is a contracted service for you) to look at their SMTP logs (outbound mail) to tell you what is happening in the server negotiation between your provider and VM.  If the VM servers are dishing out error codes we'd like to know and if it is your server that is dishing them out we'd also like to know. You cannot automatically assume that the issue lies with VM.  And from the partial error message you posted it seems like it doesn't.

I will add that if this is a VM issue then the VM staff here will be able to refer to the VM e-mail team and the VM postmaster to have it dealt with - but not until we have established the facts.

Re: For attention of Postmaster: Chessworld.net Emails being blocked

Hi there

I noticed you may give priority to DMARC records, and we have now added a new DMARC record which may help the issue I hope.

Your documentation mentions DMARC here: https://community.virginmedia.com/t5/Email/Advice-for-sending-emails-to-Virgin-Media-domains/td-p/39...

We do not currently use DMARC records and it is an easy addition to add - so added one.

I will also try and check the logs as you suggest.

Thanks so far. I can report back if this resolves the issue or not in the next day or two.

Re: For attention of Postmaster: Chessworld.net Emails being blocked

@kingscrusher

You seem to be someone who has their own domain but has no idea of how to read error messages and possibly no idea how mail servers communicate.

Email transactions occur in a number of stages

  • Connection
  • Receiving server identifies itself
  • Sending server identifies itself with HELO or EHLO <FQDN>
  • Receiving server sends back capabilities
  • Sending server sends Envelope sender
  • Receiving server accepts or rejects address
  • Sending server sends Envelope recipient
  • Receiving server accepts ot rejects address
  • Sending server sends DATA command.
  • Receiving server accepts command
  • Sending server sends email data.
  • Data accepted or rejected.
  • Mail transaction ends.

So lets look at your error:

Unable to deliver message to the following recipients, due to being unable to connect successfully to the destination mail server.

If we take this message at face value then there is no point in asking for your domain to be whitelisted - as we haven't yet got to the stage where your email address is passed.  Let alone the point at which DMARC kicks in - which is after the email data is sent - You do know the difference between the From: address and the Mail From: address don't you?

So the question is - why is your email server unable to connect to Virgin Media's mail exchanger.

If there's no connection it can be.

  1. Routing issues between your mail server and Virgin Media's mail server
  2. Your MAIL SERVER IP address could be blacklisted, causing Virgin Media's mail exchanger to reject the connection..

The list is possibly not exhaustive but those are two of the most obvious causes.

That's why you need to look at the logs from your mail server.  To see if Virgin Media's mail server sent anything at all back or if the connection failed completely.

BTW - Your SPF record is missing it's ending.

Chessworld.net. 86110 IN TXT "v=spf1 mx a ip4:63.134.215.106 ip4:63.134.216.106"

You should normally end up with an expression to deal with addresses not in the SPF record.

+all - pass all other addresses
?all - say nothing about whether all other addresses should pass or fail
~all - soft fail  fails the server but take no action.  Common when testing SPF records
-all - hard fail - fails all other addresses.

Re: For attention of Postmaster: Chessworld.net Emails being blocked

Hi there

Thanks for that

I can try adding +all

if you think that helps?

You can check my domain health at:

https://mxtoolbox.com/domain/chessworld.net/

I saw here a DMARC warning and thought I should add a DMARC record

But if that fails i can try adding the '+all' to the SPF record if you think that could be the next thing to try

Thanks for that info

Edit: BTW Pinging from my webserver to viriginmedia.com seems to be okay which seems to rule out a potential routing issue.

ping virginmedia.com

Re: For attention of Postmaster: Chessworld.net Emails being blocked

Don't use +all - SPF i is meant to protect YOUR email domain.  It specifies the servers that you use to send out mail

If you want to test it - use ~all

You definiely need to bone up on how email works.

In order to find a domain inbound servers or Mail Exchangers - you need to look up their MX record in DNS

;; ANSWER SECTION:
virginmedia.com. 86400 IN MX 1 mx.mnd.ukmail.iss.as9143.net.
virginmedia.com. 86400 IN MX 1 mx.tb.ukmail.iss.as9143.net.

These are the two hostnames an MTA will try to connect to when  delivering emails for the following domains

blueyonder.co.uk
virginmedia.com
ntlworld.com
virgin.net

Re: For attention of Postmaster: Chessworld.net Emails being blocked

Yep checked now:

nslookup
Default Server: dns.google
Address: 8.8.8.8

> set q=mx
> virginmedia.com
Server: dns.google
Address: 8.8.8.8

Non-authoritative answer:
virginmedia.com MX preference = 1, mail exchanger = mx.mnd.ukmail.iss.as9143.net

virginmedia.com MX preference = 1, mail exchanger = mx.tb.ukmail.iss.as9143.net
