I have tried changing my password, I have updated the settings on my android and still get an error message. This account has been set up for 10 years so I cant understand why this has now occured.

Would you be able to remove all of the settings on your Android and reset your password on My Virgin Media and then re-add the server settings with the new password.
Hopefully this will clear the issue and let you send emails again.
