Are you using VM webmail in a browser (chrome, firefox etc)
If so, check your Sort By settings - you can change them around as much as you like to find the one you like. It may be they are in a different order than you expect. Another option may be to refresh the browser window - it can take up to a few minutes to refresh otherwise.
Sorting on date, and the message I wanted to move was from yesterday, so should have been near the top.
MissPasco also said "Another option may be to refresh the browser window - it can take up to a few minutes to refresh otherwise."
For Chrome you can either:
Hold down Ctrl and click the Reload button
Or, hold down Ctrl and press F5.

Clicking the three line menu icon and telling VM where to move it
Any other way I can't think of at the moment?
Is it possible you clicked a different button or choice - is it in a different folder or archived? Can you repeat the action - put something expendable in spam and try to move it out the same way - what happens then?
However I update, it's going to look like I don't know what I'm doing, but I really can't understand how this happened.
The message was in another folder, though I had checked all the NTL/VM folders before I posted. I moved the message using the 3-bar icon and Move to Inbox. The mssage somehow found its way to a Gmail folder in the tree structure that would have required me to scroll down the tree structure 5 lines to make the folder visible before I selected it. This I did not do. It's got to have been user error in some way I suppose, though I can't see how. I'm not a novice when it comes to this sort of thing. I'll have to pay more attention when I next move messages.
Glad to hear you have found it. Accidents and glitches happen, even if we know what we are doing! You can delete those folders if you don't use them. When I've lost an email, I use my email client to search for it, as the search function in VM webmail is so limited.
