Email delay

Over the last week I've started to receive a mail delayed error message from my postmaster when I send a group email. Only ntlworld, blueyonder and virginmedia accounts are delayed, all other accounts receive their mail as normal. I assume it's the receiving virgin mail servers that are causing the problem, how can I resolve this?

Messages are pop3 and sent through my own domain at One.com

Would changing my send server to virgin help?

Sample error message below.

Thanks in advance for any help.

This is the mail system at host mailrelay4-2.pub.mailoutpod1-cph3.one.com.

Re: Email delay

Contrary to popular belief email is not actually guaranteed to be instantaneous.  There are mechanisms in place to retry mail delivery or report an eventual failure in the case of a temporary server outage on the receiving end.

Greylisting is an anti spam measure that takes advantage of the fact that in the past spammers haven't used mail servers but rather single shot scripts to deliver their wares.  By rejecting a first  (or even second) attempt they can be sure that it is a mail server attempting to deliver the mail.

However what sort of delays are we talking about here?  I know my own personal server (which is not Virgin's) will greylist mail for 15 minutes.

It would also be interesting to see the banner the server uses to announce itself to the recipients mail server, as this should normally be it's FQDN. Trying a quick connect on port 25 suggests that this is not the case.

If I PM you my email address would you be able to send me a mail so I can check this?

Tim

Incoming email not being delivered

Over the last 24 hours I've been aware of a number of emails not arriving at a blueyonder email address.  Some are arriving but others just don't get there and don't get bounced back.

Various people are experiencing the same kind of issue on twitter

After a long phone call with customer support I can't get them to acknowledge any issue but is there some delay or problem with VM email servers?  One warning message came back after 24 hours with a warning about greylisting.  This is when sending from gmail to VM and also from another host to VM and finding emails don't arrive so it's not just a single account.

Other ISPs seem to have noted the same issue

But I can't get VM to acknowledge any problems.  Nothing has changed locally so it's not spam filters, junk mail etc.

Thanks for any help.

Re: greylisting

Same here! It’s both irritating and worrying.

Re: greylisting

So that is 4 reports this morning, 2 are in other threads.  Can we get VM involved now for investigation?

I have some more information that may be relevant.

Since around 2am I find that email messages that I post to my blueyonder address, or my wife's BY address, from my address at the university of Birmingham (@cs.bham.ac.uk) are not received by VM/BY. However I can post from that bham address to my yahoo address and to colleagues with other email addresses. For a short time messages from my BY address to myself were not getting through, but that seems to be working now.

I have also been able to post from yahoo mail to my BY address. So it looks as if success or failure of posts to VM depend on the source. There may be some mail negotiation problem between VM and various mail providers, but not all.

If anyone reading this has a UK academic email address xxxx.ac.uk it would be useful to know whether you can post from that to VM or BY.

I wonder whether this complaint on the Forum is about the same problem?

and probably another 4 or 5 similar reports on Twitter.  Hoping that we can get VM's attention sooner or later.

Re: greylisting

Same issue here not receiving emails that should forward to my BY account from a personal email.

Some are getting through, but some aren't and haven't since yesterday morning (I can see them in my personal webmail - which I don't often use)

My web host says it down to greylisting.

If I look in my BY webmail there has been no spam in that period as well - so somebody is tinkering at VM?
