Email Send failing with VM305

My laptop, and other devices in my house are getting an enter user credential dialogue box and a logging failure VM305 on sending emails using Outlook. I have checked the CBL but my IP address has not been recorded on the list in the last 20 days. I phoned VM helpline who sent me settings details , which I'd already checked to be okay. I am getting inbound messages. I have changed my email password and that has not helped. Please advise....

Re: Email Send failing with VM305

Hello

The problem you have is that there is a spambot on your network and unless it is removed you will continue to be listed.

Follow :- https://community.virginmedia.com/t5/Security-matters/Searching-for-Spambots-on-your-network/td-p/40...

Find and removal is important as these spambots can also be a ingress for further malaware.

Just as an added FYI do you use any VPN's.

Re: Email Send failing with VM305

And you have not been checking the right list. You need to look at the results for SBL CSS on Spamhaus. On that and VM will refuse to relay your e-mail. VM305 error is strong evidence that your external IP is on SBLCSS because VM check against that list.

Re: Email Send failing with VM305

Thanks for quick reply. While I'm checking out spambots i thought I'd let you know I checked the list at abuseat.org/lookup.cgi. i think this is a spamhaus check.

Hello

This is the actual spamhaus check that you need :- https://www.spamhaus.org/lookup/

If your on the PBL list that is okay as everybody who has a dynamic IP is on that one.

Re: Email Send failing with VM305

I am on SPL (for some reason) and have requested to be removed. Here's hoping they do!

There was no activity on TCP port 25 from my laptop.

Thanks for the help.

Re: Email Send failing with VM305

Hello

It will be remove after 2 days clear of traffic. It could also be that the spambot is asleep.

It might not just be laptop we have had Smart TV's, Firesticks, Android Boxes.

Do you use any free VPN like Hola ?

Re: Email Send failing with VM305

Hello

Don't run Hola VPN Free, then note But Hola Free VPN is anything but a VPN.

If the follow those instructions is tells you have to place the wireless card into monitor mode.

On the contrary it is a proven source of this issue.

Well the Firestick if it has been broken with unauthorised software is also a proven source of this issue. Instructions on testing devices to see where the infection is are here:

https://community.virginmedia.com/t5/Security-matters/Searching-for-Spambots-on-your-network/td-p/40...

They involve connecting the device to a Windows PC using a wifi hotspot and  running Wireshark and monitoring for activity on port 25 tcp

removing the infection can be difficult. AV and Malware software scanners often don't work or find anything. But it is always worth giving the malwarebytes suite of software a try. Download only from the malwarebytes site though.
