Download Old ntlworld emails

I would like to download all of my old emails from the NTL World server-going back to when I first opened the account.

Can this be done using Outlook or GMail? I'm sure that many years ago there was a fairly simple way to remove all emails from the ntlworld server and store them on a computer/hard drive but for the life of me I can't remember where that information is/was

I also sure that there are many on this forum who will be able to tell me how to do it. Free preferably.
