Can't add account to outlook

NickyK
Tuning in

I had my NTLworld account synced to outlook on my laptop.  All was working well until this afternoon when it stopped sending my messages.

I tried all the turning off/on and logging in and out and now deleted the account from outlook.

When i try and add it back on it does not recognise the account.  I thought it was an outlook issue, but microsoft were great and remotely tried to do it and they got an error message to contact administrator.  I have no idea how to contact an administrator as on the VM contact section I can't find email help!

Any advice, anything I can do or I will I wake up tomorrow and all will be well?

Thanks

Hi @NickyK

I'm afraid the screenshot you sent has been rejected as it contains your full email address under Email address and username ( you don't want to be spammed by web crawlers)

I'm no expert with email settings but I'm using the built in outlook on windows 11 and using the settings on the following page (under windows10 mail)

https://www.virginmedia.com/help/virgin-media-mail-how-to-use-email-with-mail-clients

The main differences being:-

Incoming email server   imap.virginmedia.com:993:1
Outgoing (SMTP) email server   smtp.virginmedia.com:465:1

It maybe that the configuration process is failing in your email client because of recent historical events resulting in a temporary denial of access to the server, for example SMTP server blocking access because to many failed authentication events have occurred in the past hour. To see if this is the cause open a Command Shell window and enter the following where username:password is replaced with your email address and password, i.e. richard.branson@virginmedia.com:Y54kpX5g:

curl -v smtps://smtp.virginmedia.com -u username:password 2>&1 | findstr "214 VM"

The resulting output for success will be similar to:

< 214-2.0.0 This is cmsmtp ESMTP service help
< 214-2.0.0 To contact postmaster send email to postmaster@virginmedia.com.
< 214-2.0.0 For local information send email to Postmaster at your site.
< 214 2.0.0 end of HELP info
214-2.0.0 This is cmsmtp ESMTP service help
214-2.0.0 To contact postmaster send email to postmaster@virginmedia.com.
214-2.0.0 For local information send email to Postmaster at your site.
214 2.0.0 end of HELP info

and for failure:

< 535 5.7.8 Authentication Credentials Invalid (VM300)

Can you post just the failure resulting output here or just the VM error code shown.

Thanks, I'll try that.  I can;t work out why it just stopped working yesterday and now won't let me add it back in...

On my screenshot I thought I had blacked out the personal details.

I;ve tried this and the command prompt just comes back there is no error or it looking for anything.  I am positive i have typed it in correctly, however I am not a specialist!  I assume all the spaces are just one space and I add the word curl directly after the >

Sorry to be so naive.

Okay, so some progress, but still not fixed.

By adding the SSL/TLS option in advanced settings I have managed to fix incoming, but outgoing is giving this message

Send test email message: Outlook cannot connect to your outgoing (SMTP) email server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).

When I changed the SMTP to 465 I have this message

Send test email message: The server responded: 421 csmtp6.tb.ukmail.iss.  Any ideas what this means?

That is correct, similar to the following:

C:\Users\用心棒>curl -sv smtps://smtp.virginmedia.com -u 用心棒@virginmedia.com:Y54kpX5g 2>&1 | findstr "214 VM"

Okay tried again and I have 'File not found - STR'

There should be no space in the command findstr, i,e. should not be find str

okay, that worked this time and there is a lot of stuff, but this is the message at the end:
