It might not be the biggest date on the calendar, but today is Safer Internet Day 2017. This year’s theme is ‘Be the change: Unite for a better internet’.

The aim of the day is all about highlighting the positive uses of technology and exploring the role we can all play in helping to create a better and safer online community.

Switched on Families

Virgin Media are committed to this every year, but our journey began back in 2012 where we were involved directly with our customers listening to some of the concerns they had about being online. We learnt that the benefits of the internet far outweigh the negatives but families still wanted a little extra support in certain areas so this led to us creating Switched on Families.

Switched on Families has a lot of useful information for parents whose children are just starting to venture into the online world as well as some great advice for keeping things safe for older kids too. You can find advice on playing nice, who to trust as well as an interactive guide to help you make the right choices about your family’s web use.

You can read more about the work we're doing here

Virgin Media Community

My role as a Moderator here on this online community is to help you get the most out of it. It's your space. We want to make sure everyone has a positive experience using the community - and we work to the community guidelines to make sure this is a warm and welcoming environment.

We read posts made on the community to make sure everyone is writing in a friendly manner (no swearing!), we clean up spam, and if you flag a comment or reply, it’s us moderators that check it against the official community guidelines and take any appropriate action.

While we only allow adults to join (16 and 17 year old's need to get their parent's permission) we are well aware that this website is accessible to all. We're also all too aware that it's Virgin Media that host this site, and all the responsibilities that come with that as a company.

Give a smile

So in keeping with Safer Internet Day, let's have share some positivity.

Post a picture in the comments below to make everyone smile. Cat pictures are always welcome.
