Premier League fans rejoice; after 48 days away, football’s back! Can Liverpool repeat last season’s triumph? Will Man City reclaim the title? Can Chelsea’s transfer activity land them the title? We look ahead to what you can expect and where you can find all the action on Sky Sports, BT Sport, Amazon Prime and BBC with Virgin TV this month.

Premier League

There’s a host of Premier League action to look forward to this month. With a shorter pre-season and longer transfer window extending into October, the first weeks of the season will be hectic with teams keen to get back into the swing of things quickly. All of September’s 28 matches are being shown live on TV, so there’s a wealth of action to see. We’ve picked 5 games we think are unmissable.

Fulham v Arsenal – Sat 12th Sept 12.30PM BT Sport 1

Fulham are back in the Premier League and will be hoping to consolidate after being either promoted or relegated in each of their last three seasons. They kick things off with a London derby against Arsenal, who will be keen to build on their FA Cup and Community Shield trophies in August.

Liverpool v Leeds – Sat 12th Sept 5.30PM Sky Sports Premier League

Perhaps the standout game of the opening weekend sees the Premier League champions welcome the champions of the Championship in a fixture sure to capture the imagination. Jurgen Klopp vs Marcelo Bielsa, two great tacticians of the game, even without fans, it promises to be a fascinating opening day encounter.

Spurs v Everton – Sun 13th Sept 4:30PM Sky Sports Premier League

Neither side would say they’re satisfied with how things unfolded last season, but a new season is a welcome reset for both. Mourinho v Ancelotti will be a fascinating tactical battle and both managers have pedigree beyond last season’s finishes. Everton have made some key signings this summer and will want to hit the ground running in North London.

Chelsea v Liverpool – Sun 20th Sept 4.30PM Sky Sports Premier League

We don’t have to wait long for the first ‘top six’ head to head of the season. After the lifting of their transfer ban, Chelsea have spent big this summer in an attempt to bridge the gap to Liverpool and Man City. This will be an important early test of their credentials.

Wolves v Man City – Mon 21st Sept 8PM Sky Sports Premier League

Man City’s domestic target this season is clear; reclaim the Premier League trophy. They start a week later than their rivals after being involved in the latter stages of last season’s Champions League. It’s a tricky start against a Wolves side that did the double over Pep Guardiola’s men last season.

The Championship

The Championship also starts this weekend, can it top the drama it produced last season, with its twists and turns in the battle for promotion, play off places and to avoid relegation all going right down to the wire? In this most unpredictable of divisions, of course it can.

Watford v Middlesbrough – Fri 11th Sept 7.45PM Sky Sports Main Event

After relegation, Watford will be aiming to bounce back to the Premier League at the first time of asking. No man knows more about the Championship than Middlesbrough boss Neil Warnock, who is twelve games shy of his 1500th in management and will be looking for his ninth promotion as manager. Watford will need to be savvy to get off to a winning start.

Birmingham v Brentford – Sat 12th Sept 12.30PM Sky Sports Main Event

Brentford suffered heartbreak last season losing in the play-off final to Fulham so it will be interesting to see how they embrace another season in The Championship. They begin at St Andrews against a Birmingham side playing under Aitor Karanka for the first time, the man who won promotion with Middlesbrough in 2016.

The action doesn’t stop with England’s top two divisions, there’s also a host of action from the FA Women’s Super League, Carabao Cup, Scottish Premier League this month. If you’re a foreign football aficionado then you can also catch the Bundesliga, Ligue 1 and the MLS with Virgin TV.
