Not long finished watching a fascinating documentary called "Atari Game Over", or something like that from 2014. It pretty much centred around the rumours of all the Atari 2600 ET game carts that were claimed to have been dumped and burried in the dessert back in 1983, a reported up to millions of ET carts and the search for those cart to see if the story was true!.
Guess what, a confirmed and true story, of sorts and no longer a myth. Not only was the site located they even found the Atari dump and excavated the game carts which are, under local law, now owned by the local town (probably sold since the program was made). Now that's the myth confirmed in itself. However, it seems from the carts they found & removed from the site which the myth suggested were pretty much totally ET titled carts, only about 10% of the carts were in fact ET which was the biggest surprise, most were made up of many other titles including the better and most famous game titles. Not only that, but whist sadly the documentary never confirmed total numbers of carts found it seems more thousands\tens of thousands of carts were dumped than the reported hundreds of thousands \ millions!.
But a fascinating program all the same.
Actually, just read that they only recovered about 1300 carts but believe that the rest are still in the site that was since refilled with no planned expected future dig. But Atari officials have since said there are not the millions of carts burried on the site as originally reported but more just over 700,000 that remain in the site and all are different titles (as confirmed by the documentary) and not simply ET!.
