Removing virgin media box inside house

Hi,

I have just bought a house which has a number of wall mounted virgin boxes.

I want to remove them but they appear to have what i understand to be ‘torx’ screws attaching them to the wall.

Does anyone know the size of torx screw driver I need to remove these?

I’d rather not buy an entire set to figure this out.

Virgin dont use any form of torx sockets for internal isolator housings.  They are usually Philips screws

Torx is a star shaped design. It comes in various formats inc. tamperproof/security. You can buy screwdriver bits to remove these from the likes of Screwfix and Toolstation etc.

You can also buy individual bits from eBay.

Some wall boxes from the original cable TV companies use another pattern with a 'button' head security screw which is called something like 'system zero'. Example of the screw head pattern below.

Bits for these are less common. Most screws for VM should, however, be a PH or PZ screw.

Hi,

it’s definitely not a Phillips screw, it has a star shape with grooves around the outside.

I’m pretty sure it’s an older model

im away from the house but I’ll take a pic and post it when I get there

If it is a 'system zero' screw head, do a Google search on

'system zero screwdriver bits'

and buy from an online supplier of your choice.

I have sometimes been able to get these screws out with some long-nosed pliers, WD40 and brute force!

If you are removing VM internal cabling though, make sure you cap the incoming cable to prevent noise ingress to the network.

VM have no clear policy on removing their cables when they are no longer in use. It is regularly asked on the forum. The most sensible and succinct advice I have read is here IMHO.

Worse case you can cut the head off with a Dremel.
