Black Box Outside Property

Hi,

Can someone please advise me?

We've recently moved into our property and want to drop the kerb for the drive, however to the nearside of the pavement (where the dropped kerb will be) there is a black stump about 20" tall. I have been told this is property of Virgin Media.

Can I ask what it is and will it interfere with my planning permission for a dropped kerb?

Thank you in advance.

Re: Black Box Outside Property

can you provide a photo?
it doesn't sound like something that is usually associated with Virgin.

however, have planning dept advised that it would need to be moved?
if yes, then viring would charge for the survey to inspect it, and then charge if works are carried out.
the survey is between £200 and £300 i believe, and the works would usually be in the thousands, and are rarely done unless it's a health and safety issue.

Re: Black Box Outside Property

Hi CaroD28,

Welcome to our forums and thank you for reaching out.

I'm afraid we don't recognise this as some of our equipment, but we're happy to take a closer look for you. Could you let me know who told you this was ours? If you'd be happy to provide your postcode, I can check to see whether any of our connections are in the vicinity and would interfere.

Thanks,

Rachael

Re: Black Box Outside Property

Hi CaroD28,

Thank you for getting back to me and providing this. It doesn't look like we've got any of our major connections on your street, so I'm pretty confident that this isn't our equipment.

Are you able to confirm who advised that this belonged to us?

Thanks,

Rachael

Re: Black Box Outside Property

Looks like some very old BT or, maybe even, GPO-era plant.

You could try BT Openreach via the "Locating our network" section here

https://www.openreach.co.uk/orpg/home/contactus/contactus.do

From my own past experiences, any contact/communication with BT Openreach is usually a fairly soul-destroying, miserable and time-consuming experience (often with no useful outcome!) so be prepared for this!
