Drop in speed from Hub 3 as router to TP Link

Hi all, I have VM 250Mbps package with Hub 3.  When using the hub as router I am getting 250Mbps+ speeds, no issues.

When using my TP Link C7 AC1750 router and Hub 3 in Modem <ode, the WiFi speed drops to 100Mbps.  I am using good quality (based on reviews?) ethernet cable to link the two (Cat7). TP Link C7, I believe, has sufficiently fast internet port to take the 250Mmps from Hub 3, so this shouldn't be an issue either.

I also have 3x mesh devices (TP Link RE450), but I don't thinks that's relevant here.

What do I need to do to get my TP Link router do 250Mbps, instead of the 100Mbps..?

Try the Hub 3 in Router mode and the TP Link C7 AC1750 in Access Point mode.

  • I am about to give up trying to - get rid of my whole router + mesh setup and go back to just using Hub 3 as default router…

Hey ttullman, thank you for reaching out and a warm welcome to the community, I am sorry to hear you are having some issues with a TP link.

We cannot guarantee our equipment to work with any 3rd party kit, normally you would see a drop in speed due to being 3rd party.

I have taken a look on our side and everything looks fine, is it only with a TP link when this happening?

  • Right so your TP-Link router is capable of 250Mb via its ethernet ports, but via its WiFi is only 100Mb?

Log into your tp-link config page, 192.168.0.1 I believe.

Go to the Advanced tab, then select Wireless, then Wireless Settings
Make sure Smart Connect is disabled.

Then Press 5GHz and try these settings.

    Security: WPA/WPA2-Personal(Recommended)
    Version: WPA2-PSK
    Encryption: AES
    Password: Your choice
    Mode: 802.11ac only
    Channel Width: 80Mhz
    Channel: 48
    Transmit Power: High

Then make sure on your phone/computer that you are connecting to the "_5G" network.

Let us know how it goes. Try experimenting with different channels, there are only 4 to choose from according to my emulator, 36, 40, 44, and 48.

Thank you for the detailed instructions.

I've followed all the steps and tried all the combinations of 40MHz/80MHz channel widths with 36/40/44/48 channels. The fastest connection that I managed to squeeze was 109MBps... :(((

I use all Apple gear and over the years when someone posts a similar issue and finds a solution I note it down.  So look through these and see if any of them helps.

        _____________

        APPLE CONNECTION ISSUES

The setting that is critical on the Hub 3 is to have Wi-Fi Security set to WPA2-PSK
this will ensure a fuss free connection with Apple kit.
        ———————————————-

After a MacOS/iOS update, it may auto turn on Automatic Proxy Discovery for all Wi-Fi networks - so turn it off in network settings as per message 7.  In iOs go to Settings>WiFi> tap the blue”I” icon and scroll down and make sure Configure Proxy/‘ is set to off - also that Configure DNS and Configure IP are set to automatic

        ===========
Check this...  no connectivity on Apple kit may be a MAC filtering issue for Apple devices
        ___________________________

Also, are you running a VPN - if so turn it off and see if that helps - also disable “Private Relay” if thats switched on in your iCloud settings on the phone/mac - switch it off

        APPLE WIFI SCANNER

Get Apple's Airport Utility for the iPhone. Then go ... Settings->Airport Utility scroll down and toggle "Wifi Scanner" to on (green). Then open the App and click on the Blue WiFi Scan icon at top right. then hit the blue “Scan” icon - when you are in the location of the affected device(s).

Data will flow in continuously updating, with the SSID’s showing with the "strongest" i.e. "best" signal at the top of the list - they have the highest RSSI values - and the channel numbers are also shown.

Only use channels 1,6,11 for the 2.4 GHz band - choose the best channel for your location (least congested ) and switch your SSID to that.

Have you tried adjusting the 5GHz Wi-Fi settings on the TP Link C7 ?

E.g. does configuring Wi-Fi  mode AC only at 40 or 80 Mhz make any difference ?

Even try with 5GHz Wi-Fi mode N only at 40 Mhz do these settings make a any difference ?

Look also at the encruption mode does use of WPA2-PSK or WPA3-SAE ( if present ) make a difference.  Avoid the old WPA-PSK, iOS often grumbles about that.

I think your suggestion is the same as the suggestion from asim18 below.  Tried it, but unfortunately the fastest that I got was 109MBps...

No option of WPA3-SAE encryption mode, so I have it at WPA2-PSK.

Are you speed testing the iPhone with Apple Relay (a form of VPN) disabled or enabled which could be slower ?

Without Apple Relay. Also tested on my Mac and same result. 100Mbps vs 250Mbps via cable…

That would probably work but I’m still struggling to understand how a default basic Virgin Media Hub is able to deliver 250Mbps WiFi speed while TP Link C7 is struggling to get past 100Mbps. Surely there is something in the settings or configuration that is causing the drop..?

Just checked.  When connecting with the TP Link router with cable, I get the full 250Mbps+ speed, so clearly the speed is being transferred between the VM Hub and the TP Link router.

However, the WiFi only gives ~100Mbps...

Any suggestions what might be wrong..?

VM go for speed and likely with all the hidden options you can do for Wifi it might be fast but how stable is it for like gaming?

As well as the good info from asim18 ,  The port on that Router are the older 10/100/1000 so what does the Router show in the link speed information within the Router admin pages?

This one is not from the Admin page, but just general macOS wifi menu

Struggling to find where it is in the Admin mode... Not here I presume?

  • Maybe your QoS settings are limiting the bandwidth?

Log into TP-Link config page go to "Advanced" and then "QoS". If enabled try to disable it.
