Super Hub 3 Upgrade query

I have been with VM since NTL years and have had the Super Hub3 for many, many years and I'm just asking since alot of other providers are upgrading there routers are VM doing the same and have I missed out on any updates as I see that they are upto No.5 now and i'm still on No.3?

Any information would be appreciated

  • VM do not ‘upgrade’ their hubs. They supply an appropriate one for the speed of your plan. The only way to get another hub is to upgrade your plan to 1G and this would then need another different hub. It might be a Hub5 or even a Hub4.

  • Virgin don’t care - as long as they have your money - it’s a big **bleep** you

  • Virgins recommended website for speedtests -

Hub 5 using the 2.5 Gbit port Cat5e Cable via a 2.5 Gbit managed switch (EEE of by default) to a PC with a 2.5 Gbit port.  xsamknows.xcom/realsxpeed/ remove the red X to use the link.

Get your own wifi router with 1Gb ports and put hub in modem mode

Get your own wifi router with 1Gb ports or better and put hub in modem mode

  • What hub you have would depend on your speed, believe me you do not want a Hub 4, nothing but trouble. A previous engineer visit took one look at the Hub 4 and said I'm changing that. He had even brought a Hub 5 in with him.

Hub 5 - WiFi 6 is for the 1 Gig package, been on this for 2 years now.

But this does not solve your problem: the easiest solution is to get a WiFi 6 router and set it up as a WiFi access point. Connected by cable to the hub. If your in a larger property how easy would it be to run a cable round the skirting boards to a central location? You can get a Flat cat6 cable on Amazon. and the router for under £50, not the ideal solution as most don't want to pay out money.

Plus on the 1gb package you will only get 960mbit download tops.

with Hub 5 which has the 2.5 ports 1160 is possible, but you need to use a managed switch to prevent EEE on, which nobles the port. The latest firmware disactivates this, but rollout is delayed or very selective.

This may be why Hub 5 rollout is being delayed.

  • Same as you davrob, VM loosing the plot I think. I would like wi-fi 6, pleaded numerous times for updated router. Good news new Ofcom rules on switching providers may help. EE offering wi-fi 7 routers now.

EE offers the WiFi 7 router if you pay monthly for the upgrade. Standard is only WiFi 6

  • Definitely missing new Wi-Fi speeds, I`ve got the same problem. Shame.
