I had this problem with a new remote, I went through the procedure until the TV switched off, but the sound mute button did not work. The fix was to use the channel up button until it switched off the TV again then check that the buttons you had working with your old remote work with the new one. You may have to keep scrolling the channel button up a few times before all the buttons work as you want them to.

Are you entering the codes manually or are you using the remote to find them ?

Using the 'manual' method, how many separate times did it switch the TV off, you have to remember the number of 'channel up' presses you make each time to ensure that you are not just using the same one each time, and you go the next one 'up'. It is a bit fiddly but it worked for me. From memory I think that it was the forth time before all the buttons worked.
