Workmen damaged outside cable

Hi,

I'm looking for some advice. This morning we left the house early and when we came back some workmen had dug up a trench in the pavement outside our property. When we get in the house we find that TV, broadband and phone are all not working.

I don't think this is a coincidence and I am certain the workmen have cut through the the Virgin Media cable that comes from the the road through our front garden and into the house.

There used to be was a small amount of exposed coaxial cable that was visible on the outside corner of our front fence which is now not there and all I've found is the end of what appears to be a cut cable. It seems to me like the workmen have tried to cover up the damage.

At the moment the trench is unfilled and I'm worried that once it is filled it will be difficult to reconnect my house to Virgin Media.

Any advice on what I should do. I've already contacted VM customer services but an engineer won't come out until Wednesday which in the meantime the workmen may have re-tarmac'd the trench.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Workmen damaged outside cable

If you can find the other half which goes into the pavement you should be able to pull some extra up the pipe so it can be reatached on Wednesday

Re: Workmen damaged outside cable

Without wanting to sound picky , its really the idiots that cut your cable you should be trying to get hold of- They cut it, they are responsible for the costs of re-instating it.

Whilst VM will do their level best to get you up and running again, If the workies have hit VM ducting and now intend to infill, could be a MAJOR problem, they need to stop until there's a proper assessment done of the damage caused and how to put it right.

Usually there's a board/sign/some equipment with the contractors details on (especially if there's an open hole) , see if you can get hold of them and explain the situation. Personally Id be pretty miffed if they continued to infill after Ive reported they have hit my utilities....

Re: Workmen damaged outside cable

Hi Kippies,

Thanks for your reply. I don't think I implied that VM were responsible...quite the opposite in fact. And you're right I am miffed!

However, until the VM engineer comes out I cannot be totally certain that my suspicions are correct. You have confirmed my fears that if the trench is infilled before the route cause of my issue is identified it could cause me major problems.

Thank you for your advice, I found the board with some contact details which I will be phoning tomorrow morning.

Thanks again!

Re: Workmen damaged outside cable

Sorry I didn't mean to infer you did think VM were responsible, just came across wrong.  Smiley Embarassed

Hopefully the contractor/VM will get you sorted sharpish, PITA to be without a connection in this day and age.
