Tech Question

Don't know if anybody else has noticed but Virgin seem to be broadcasting their HD signal in 1080i on the TiVo box, I've gone into settings to correct the issue but it doesn't give me the option of switching the input to 1080p. When watching a DVD through the TV it runs in 1080p so I know the TV isn't the reason. Any tech brains out there got a good answer to this one, just very curious.

Re: Tech Question

Original Tivo does 1080i

V6 (the new box) does live TV at 1080p- its up-scaled though as currently all broadcast channels are in MPEG2 at 1080i anyway.

V6 will do on demand in up to UHD standard.

Allegedly, they will soon switch to MP4 as teh broadcast standard which would allow V6 to do native 1080p. But vanilla TiVo will still be 1080i AFAIK

Re: Tech Question

MPEG4 channels on Freeview & Satellite are also broadcast in 1080i.

Broadcasting in Native HD (1080p) is more expensive as it uses more bandwidth, so is rarely used.
