Thanks for your reply. After posting I did a 'run test' on the Virgin Media website which acknowledged a fault. I was told to wait 10 minutes and reboot. I know this is the standard Virgin response so I was rather apprehensive. Yesterday I switched to Sky Sports 2 HD to watch the cricket and to my surprise there was no picture break up. So the system does work sometimes!!

I would like to take a look into the picture breakup and would need to run some tests to see if any signal loss occurs. I'll need to access your account but have been unable to.
