Irish RTE 2 (sports) Block

Anyone fed up with RTE2 block on sports due to licencing. Becoming a deal breaker with. "My custom on my terms"

Also cannot email Virginmedia directly. Help options. Try two extra options. I am an idiot or I am not an idiot.

Expect a call!

Re: Irish RTE 2 (sports) Block

RTE2 is not one of the international channels that virgin provide. I can therefore only assume that RTE have blocked streaming access from outside of Ireland on their website?

Nothing to do with Virgin Media. If its blocked on cable it will also be blocked on satellite (Sky) & freeview platforms in NI.

"Some programmes, including certain sport and films, may not be broadcast due to rights restrictions."

The only way to see these outside the Republic is a specialised Saorsat receiver & dish.

Customers in Northern Ireland get RTE on cable.

There are channels allocated in the "additional regions" area of the EPG for viewers in NI.

  • 875 - RTE One
  • 876 - RTE Two
  • 877 - TG4

Re: Irish RTE 2 (sports) Block

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I can see it on FreeSat (802)  Northern Ireland (6 Nations on at present). So my point is if Freesat can get it why doesn't VM aquire the License. At least for Northern Ireland.I have never had Sky but I believe it is on SKy (Northern Ireland) and also for GB with a tweak. See link I came across.

So why I am a little annoyed. I 'sometimes' prefer RTE commentary' or at least a choice. I frequently use a room at home with VM but a weak aerial signal for freeview. Came across another recent link re-rugby world cup being curtailed in N. Ireland.

I think it boils down to Sky having a licence and not VM so RTE bound to comply,; but why on freesat/view then. See an older article. Apologies for being a little confrontation in my original post. So basically again if Freesat has it why not VM.

You can't get it on UK Freesat. Freesat boxes cannot decode encrypted channels, which all the Irish ones are. The only unencrypted feeds are on the Eutelsat satellite used by Saorsat. Even if you have a Sky box NI postcodes can be blocked by the smartcard if the broadcaster wishes.
