service seems ok, phone connection comes and goes though recently, but its back on again now, randomly without anyone doing anything. could be loose wiring or rain water getting to wires that the omnibox usually protects

It sounds as though the missing Omni is potentially causing service issues. I'd like to arrange for a technician to check this out and replace the cover.
