Can't seem to check the status as a message about Virgin having problems or changing email addresses or somesuch keeps popping up. No phone though just a dead line, and no idea why (broadband is fine).

I've had a look into this and I'm unable to detect any obvious cause for this at present.
Have you tried disconnecting/reconnecting the handset or tested different equipment?
