No Phone line

I've had Virgin tv and broadband for years but decided to make use of the phone line when I moved a few weeks ago, I bought a phone and plugged it in to the phone socket, and it says 'check phone line'

Do I need to call Virgin to activate it or something? Or am I doing something wrong?

I've run a check and the line is active at the property. Are you connecting the phone into the master socket? This will be the main socket in the house, larger than the rest.
