No Phone Line

I installed my new router yesterday and plugged everything in, however the phone isn't working. I cannot dial out or in. There is no dial tone, only static if I try and dial a number. 

I tried calling into the line from my mobile and it doesn't connect to the line in my home just rings out on my mobile. 

It is not plugged into a BT line. It is plugged into the socket Virgin used last time we were customers. It is an old cable and wireless box but it worked well for Virgin a few years back. Could it be that this box needs updating?
