Line installed, phone number not connected. Need number. Help??

Need to get a new service number. When Virgin Media package was installed, phone line was also put in. I asked for my old BT number to be transferred. Didn't get any line when plugged into new connection, so left it on the BT line (yes, silly, but as a complete beginner I understood I was getting service, didn't care who from). Of course, BT still charging line rental so we've cancelled the number now. When emailed about getting a new service number with Virgin, told to call. One date with automated service later, booked an appointment with technician.
Is a technician going to be able to issue me a telephone number? If not, how do I talk to a human being who can?
