Line Cord Error

My broadband and tv work fine, but no dialing tone when I try my phone.  Left it a while to see if a few days made a difference, unplugged etc, but as soon as I plug back in and try to dial, no dialing tone and line cord error.  Phone is brand new BT8500.  I called Virgin two days ago but their call centre said the phone should be up and active yesterday.
