Landline hacked?

My landline has presumably been hacked last night and is making random calls to multiple mobile phones. We have received numerous phone calls from random people informing us that they have received 3-4 phone call from our landline number and hence they are returning the calls - we are unaware if the phone is also making international calls which would be worrying. We disconnected the phone from the landline at 08:30 hrs; however, the phone calls are still ongoing even though the phone is not plugged in. We know this as we plugged in the phone to activate the ”call barring” as advised by Virgin's Customer Service department and when we tried to do so we received multiple calls within 5 minutes all saying that had received various calls at 9:00 hrs, 11:00 hrs, 11:30 hrs and some other times. We obviously had to unplug the phone afterwards. The only solution given by Virgin Media is that a technician will attend at our property in 5 days!! We are calculating that if the landline on its own or hacked is making about 100 calls an hour, this means that in 5 days the landline would have make about 12,000 phone calls at that time. This is seriously perturbing for us and everyone receiving calls during the day and night. We have been confirmed verbally in various occasions by your Customer Service that no amount will be billed for any calls made and we do expect that Virgin Media will do as promised. We look forward to hearing from Virgin Media or any others with any similar experiences. Meantime, can someone advise me if there is any emergency line / technician for this hacking issues. Is there any valid e-mail address for Virgin? It is almost impossible to communicate with them in writing. Thanks Juan

Re: Landline hacked?

Dial out 174 and see if the automated voice comes back with your telephone number as being connected to the service.  If it comes back with any other number it's likely that an engineer has inadvertently swapped cables in the street cabinet and it's now one of your neighbours who is using your number.

Re: Landline hacked?

Hi Juan,

Really sorry to hear about this.

Sounds like this could be a possible crossed line.

I can see the arranged appointment for you via the system.

I've sent you a private message so that we can confirm this.

Hope to hear back from you soon,

Nat_J

Re: Landline hacked?

Thanks, all.

I thought about a crossed line but I cannot see how my neighbours can make 3-4 calls to the same person and then the same to different persons. The engineer might have crossed the lines of the whole neighbourhood then..!

When connecting the phone we receive calls immediately so it means that the phone is continuously calling phone numbers. The people we spoke to said that no-one speaks when they answered the phone. We asked for the times of the calls received and it is continuous...

Re: Landline hacked?

The engineer visiting our property today has confirmed that another engineer had inadvertently swapped cables in the street cabinet and that the lines were crossed as well thought by Dave.

He cannot understand though why that many calls were made continuously during the whole time and what caused that problem. It is still unclear to him.

Gladly all has now been resolved and we do hope that it does not happen again.

Pleased you got that fixed Juan ... now you need to check your next phone bill carefully to make sure you are not charged for any calls you haven't made.

Re: Landline hacked?

Thanks all.

I can confirm that nothing has been billed. The only problem we had was that as the line had made so many random calls (for unknown reasons) we had to change the number as people were returning the calls the whole time. The Virgin Team (Karen) was brilliant and changed the phone number within 2 days.

It still remains unclear why the line phoned random people and the technician did not have an answer to that.
