Can a new customer choose a home phone number?

Hi, I have signed up to Virgin wef later this month, and have requested I retain my current home number if possible.

However, I was wondering, is it possible to actually choose one's own home number - subject to it not already being in use, of course? (I'm useless at remembering numbers, hence it would be great if I could choose a number that will be more personally memorable to me.)

Re: Can a new customer choose a home phone number?

All standard phone numbers are controlled by OFCOM. These are auctioned off in blocks to telephone providers, so the facility for customers to choose numbers is not an option in this case, as your provider may not own the number you want to use. There are also very few "new" numbers available. Most are recycled to new customers within 3 months to a year of being released from a previous customer.

If you do want your own personal number, there are specialised personal number services available, but they come at a premium, & callers to these numbers will be charged premium rates to call them.

Not sure why phone companies can't publish lists of the available numbers they own, so that a new customer can choose one, but hey, no big deal. Thanks for the response. 😃

They are all published by OFCOM.

From the above link you can find the allocation of any fixed line number in the country. Likelyhood is that numbers the companies recycle are released oldest first, so there is less chance of nuisance calls being recieved.
