P.A.Y.G SIM's from all networks will expire after a certain period, not just Virgin.
It's in their Terms & Conditions clauses 3.7 and 7.2(g) if you're on one of their "Big" tariffs - 180 days.
Or for older tariffs "Original", "Addict” or “Simply 8p” only 90 days: Old Terms and Conditions clause 3.8
You could try giving customer services a call on 789 if you still have a working Virgin mobile.
Or 0345 6000 789 from any other phone.

when was the last time you made a chargeable call/text from the SIM?
It is necessary to use it least once each 3~6 months to keep it active.
I am not sure as only for emergencies. Didn't know would be cancelled. My use was no different. I have 2 phones and believe credit on both
