can I get a payg sim and only top up when need every 3 or 4 months

I have a second mobile phone I use now and again can I top up every 2,3 months or do I have to use it every month

yes of course you can.

You can get a SIM here: http://store.virginmedia.com/virgin-media-mobile/sim-only/pay-as-you-go-sim.html

or available in most stores for about 99p.

However the pay as you go rate with Virgin as a light user is quite expensive.

You could consider others such as Three Mobiles 3-2-1 tariff.

No that is fine. They used to say they expire for none use after 90 days, but it may be longer now. Most networks its 6 months

I've replied to your other post.

Unless you top up monthly to claim your "rewards" Virgin's tariff is quite expensive for a light user compared to many other network operators.

You don't have to use your phone every month but you will have to make a chargeable call at least every three months to keep the SIM active.
