My son is travelling in Australia and has had his phone stolen last November. He cancelled the sim and is using an Australian sim but I have just realised that a monthly direct debit is still being collected by Virgin. Should this have stopped when he cancelled the sim?

Sorry about the confusion with your son's SIM.
Reporting a SIM card lost/stolen wouldn't close the account.
If you report a SIM lost/stolen to us, we can place a temporary block on the SIM, preventing anyone from making chargeable calls or cancel the SIM completely and send out a replacement to your registered account address.
Which of these we do is up to the customer and dependent on the likelihood you feel of it turning up again.
We wouldn't close the account down unless a customer specifically asked for this.
