Why can I not text?

I have switched over my account from another provider to a virgin sim only. And finally, after a long hassle, broken sims and sims not being sent I have my new sim up and running. However, I cannot text anyone. I can call and received calls and texts but i cant text out. I have rang customer care 3 or 4 times over the matter, but to not a vale. One told be to turn my phone off and on again but wait at least 15mins. tried that all day. Another told me to go to my setting, then subsetting, then open a link in a webpage and said that would help; the page was about data and wifi. 

 

So my problem is, I am unable to text; why is this?

it might help if said what phone you have.

Check that your Message Centre Number is correct: +447958879890

Hi Alex,

 

It is a Microsoft lumia 550.

 

What is a message centre and do i ring that number?

I also have another issue with my phone, (i cannot download any apps), should i create another post for this?

Hi Jade,

use this link here: Phone Support

Select Microsoft > then select a phone (550 isn't listed so try the 640) > Select Messaging > Select How do I edit the SMS centre number.

I can't really advise on your Apps problem.
Now that we know you have a Windows phone I'm sure that someone who has experience with these may be able to help (no need for a new post).

Hi Alex,

Followed the instructions, the centre number was correct, and my phone still is bouncing my text back saying its unable to send.

Its not the handset as i was able to use it with my sim from another network and the phone is unlocked so its not that.

 

Have you any other idea of what it could be?

Hi Jade,

you've already spoken to customer service so presumably they've checked that everything is OK Virgin's end and with your SIM.

 

I've had a search around past threads for anyone with a similar problem and found this: Can't send texts but can use mobile data.

The poster has a Lumia 520 & got around the problem by changing to 2G in the settings.

I don't like to suggest this as a cure but of curiosity you could try this on your phone to see if it works for you.
(If you're unsure how use the help link I provided earlier).

Change settings to 2G, try sending yourself a text - if it still doesn't work, change it back to 3G again.

Hi Alex,

I have tried to find the right thing to do that but i cant. My phone does flick between 3g and 2g, so it used both. 

Is there anyway you can check on your end if my account is okay? They said everything was fine when i rang up but this issue is just not getting resolved with what was said

I don't work for Virgin.

This is a community forum. I'm a member of the public like yourself just trying to help out Smiley Happy

Hi Alex,

As you can tell, im new to this. Thank you so much for your help. Hopfully a member of Virgin does see this, or ill be able to contact them.
