What does Virgin Mobile 4G display as on notification bar?

When anyone who uses Virgin Mobile and is connected on a Virgin Mobile 3G sim the top notification bar shows H or H+ which is normal for a non 4G sim, my question is, what shows there when you have a 4G card inserted when connected to 4G? will it show LTE? or say 4G, or will it continue to show as H or H+, if the latter how will you know which one you are currently connected to?

I am referring to the front screen of the mobile that shows reception etc.

On iOS devices it'll currently say LTE, but will say 4G once Apple do a software update for the Virgin Media network.

On Android devices it'll say 4G.

I forgot to mention that it is indeed an android phone I have so sorry about that.

May I ask, what would it say if it was for a non 4G sim, in other words 3G?

The reason I ask is I have ever only seen the H or H+ when using mobile data, is this normal?

Android Lollipop 5.1.1

I think I may have found the answer here, is it correct would you say?

Determine what data network you are using

On networks and on phones that don't support Voice over 4G (VOLTE) then it will revert to 3G when you initiate a call.

As it says, it can take a while to revert back.

EE support VOLTE for business users and will be rolling it out for all shortly

3 support VOLTE

Virgin no.

It's not on general distribution on EE as yet, so if Virgin do go down that route it will be some time after. It is also associated with Voice over Wifi. EE released that first some time ago, but again not on Virgin.

There are 2 systems to Voice over Wifi. 1. Native where it will operate on enable phones only and 2. Via a stand alone app which increases its availability to more handsets.  Native is best as it will automatically switch from wifi to cellular is you move out of range.

I think you need to take into account how long it took Virgin to get 4G and now that it is here it is not exactly the fastest kid on the block.

I suspect the additions are some way off

I ordered a new 4G sim today, and this was never mentioned, are you saying I will not be able to use all the additions that having a 4G Sim card will bring? apart from mobile data browsing speeds.

I don't think the Sony Xperia Z1C supports VOLTE, well not according to GSM Arena site.

Re: What does Virgin Mobile 4G display as on notification bar?

There are many parts to 4G services. Nowhere have Virgin said that VoLTE or WiFi calling are available at present.

So you will get improved mobile data speeds by going to 4G along with the WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger messaging addition as promoted.
