What do EU roaming charge rules from 30.4.16 mean for me?

I have a SIM-only contract where I get an amount of data, text and minutes. When I go to Spain in a couple of weeks can I just use these allowances as if I was in Britain, (except I get billed a bit extra?) or do I still have to buy a bundle? What will happen on 15th June 2017?

EU call and text prices can be found here

http://help.virginmedia.com/system/selfservice.controller?CMD=VIEW_ARTICLE&ARTICLE_ID=164916&CURRENT...

Data will need a data pass to be brought.

June 2017 will be when your UK allowances will be usable anywhere in the EU.

That's the old charges.

As of April 30th (yesterday) calls will now be 4p a minute, incoming calls 1p a minute, and texts 2p.

Getting confusing now about the EU costs.

Just had an email regarding mobile price rises on 1st July, in that email it also has EU roaming charges listed - saying calls 4p @minute, texts 1p, free to receive calls and texts.

Re: What do EU roaming charge rules from 30.4.16 mean for me?

I'm still confused. I have a rolling 30 day SIM only contract, I get 2500 minutes and 1 GB data for £10 a month. I am supposing:

1. These allowances only apply within the UK.

2. If I go to Spain and I make phone calls, those minutes are going to be billed as extras on my monthly direct debit? At those rates people have mentioned? (outgoing 4p/min, incoming 1p/min, texts 2p)

3. If I want to use data, I'd better buy a data pass?

4. What happens if I don't buy a data pass, and use data while outside the UK in the EU?

Sorry if I seem dense.

Hi badiot

1. Correct (but in July 2017 the new laws will mean your allowances will work in the EU)

2. Virgin website and an email from Virgin received today advertise 4p@minute, 1p texts and receiving is free.

3. Correct

4. Data should not work in the EU untill you buy a pass.

Re: What do EU roaming charge rules from 30.4.16 mean for me?

Hi badoit,

you're quite right to be confused.

Depending where you look on Virgin's site you're shown different prices.

Then to confuse things even further, two weeks ago @Mat_H in THIS link gave another change of price Smiley Frustrated

I do wish we could have some definitive clarification here.

Details on how to purchase a travel pass can be found here: http://store.virginmedia.com/discover/mobile/using-your-mobile/abroad.html

(You can only purchase your pass by text once you are abroad in the EU - i.e not whilst you are still here).

Going by two posters in this thread, we can all agree now that texts are costing 1p each http://community.virginmedia.com/t5/Virgin-Mobile/Roaming-text-charges/m-p/3072096#U3072096
