all new phones sold by Virgin Mobile on their "freestyle" contract are unlocked & open to all networks.
If you have an older or payg phone. It may or may not be. The best idea would be to borrow another network SIM, put it in your phone and see if it works.
A quick search on the web & I found this:
Samsung Android - If you dial the code *#7465625# into your dialler a screen will display, telling you whether Network Lock is ON or OFF.
(You could try that, let us know if it works)
If your phone is locked you'll need to call the Virgin mobile team on 789 from your Virgin mobile or 0345 6000 789 from any other phone. Give them the phone details and your account information, they should be able to supply an unlock code (I think the charge is £15.32).
Alternatively, look on Google or eBay or pop it into your local independent phone shop. You may get it unlocked cheaper.

Thank you for your interest in my various queries.
I have a couple of issues relating to my USA holiday later this year:
1. Unlocking the Galaxy s3 so i can use an American sim in the States;
2. Arranging Virgin SmartCall (i have Virgin landline anytime calls package at home). I understand (but can you confirm) that SmartCall must have a wifi connection and utilises your landline package, not your Virgin Mobile calls package. Whilst SmartCall is active does this mean the landline at home cannot be used?
I will call Virgin Mobile unless the above issues can be resolved online.
