Signal Repeaters legal?

I don't have a great mobile signal at home and would like to boost it. Are repeaters like this one legal?

http://www.mobilesignal.co.uk/products/iboost-gsm-1800

The site says so, but I have a feeling the wording might be hiding something.

If so, are there other ways with Virgin Mobile, such as using a femtocell?

Thanks for any thoughts

Jim

Re: Signal Repeaters legal?

Rather than phrasing it myself, shamelessly C&P'ed

According to Ofcom: “Repeater devices transmit or re-transmit in the cellular frequency bands. Only the mobile network operators are licensed to use equipment that transmits in these bands. Installation or use of repeater devices by anyone without a licence is a criminal offence under Section 8 of the WT Act 2006. Any person found guilty of installing or using such devices without a licence would be liable on conviction to a fine of up to £5000 and/or up to 51 weeks’ imprisonment (Six months in Scotland and Northern Ireland).”

So yup illegal to USE, not to buy or own.

Re: Signal Repeaters legal?

Hi jimstrong

As far as I am aware only the network provider can provide such equipment that is licensed to do so.

Re: Signal Repeaters legal?

Thanks both - their website claims they are exempt, quoting this page:-

http://stakeholders.ofcom.org.uk/consultations/devices/summary

But that's a 2010 consultation!
