SIM and data on old phone

Hello.

My old phone had been suddenly broken (possibly battery failure), so got a new phone and micro-SIM from the local Virgin shop, and it is working well. Really thanks for that.

But the old phone still got the original SIM inserted. What happened to this SIM? If the old phone may recover, can I use the phone, too?

I also wonder if there may be any way that I could retrieve the data (address and text messages) from the old phone?

Could the Virgin access to the data and retrieve them, or are they only stored on the phone?

If so, is the only way to go to a repair shop?

I would be grateful if you could let me have any of your advice.

Many thanks.

Re: SIM and data on old phone

If it was an upgrade and you're using the same number then sadly the old SIM is now redundant.

I'm would advise regularly backing up your new phone or downloading something like dropbox onto the phone that will do it for you Smiley Happy

Re: SIM and data on old phone

Thank you for your advice.

But the old phone is really old, so there was no option to connect to the PC for the backup.

Also, it has been broken now, so I would like to know whether it is possible to extract the data in any way (e.g. repair).

Would you have any suggestion? or should I need to give up?

Many thanks.

Re: SIM and data on old phone

Hi Kaman,

Welcome to the forums Smiley Happy

Sorry to hear about the damage to your phone. Can you let me know what phone you're using so I can see if anything can be done to get the data you want from the phone?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Thanks,

Mat

Re: SIM and data on old phone

Might depend on how the old phone stored data. Possibly on the SIM itself?

Might be possible to use a SIM card reader?

Did this myself years ago, with an old Nokia. bought this cheap SIM reader, and popped the Sim into it, and read all the data from it, then swapped for the new sim, and copied to it?? Got my contacts and some texts ported across..

Bought reader from E-bay for a couple of quid? All depends on how old the phone, whether it used phone memory of memory card etc, but might be worth a try??

(even if the old sim is no longer active, anything stored on it is still there, it just can't access the phone network)

Hope this helps...

Re: SIM and data on old phone

Thanks for coming back to me Kaman Smiley Happy

That does seem like a very old handset. The issue is the old sim is now deactivated so any data on the card will now be gone. Can you let me know if it was the sim data or other data that you needed?

Thanks,

Mat

Re: SIM and data on old phone

Dear Mat,

Thank you very much.
But I do not know how I can tell whether the data was on SIM or other (memory?)?

I had thought HughJarsse's idea might be nice, but would you mean that the data on SIM had gone?
(thank you, HughJarsse.)

Many thanks.

Re: SIM and data on old phone

Thanks for your reply Kaman Smiley Happy

The sim will definitely be de-activated so the sim reader will not be able to read the info off the old sim.

The only data that is stored on a sim card is Contact info. Is there anything else other than the contact info that you want to keep?

Let me know as soon as you can.

Thanks,

Mat
