Roaming (calls and data) not working

I enabled roaming on my pay monthly account last week. I can't use mobile data, nor make nor receive phone calls, but can send an receive text messages. When I try to buy a data plan, I am told one is still active. When I query the status, I am told it has 3584 MB.
I tried turning roaming on and off - I lost the text message ability when it was off, and with roaming back on, I could only send and receive texts as before.
I have tried manually selecting a network and rebooting my phone.

Hi jpennycook,

 

it sounds like you may have international call barring active on your account.
(This would account for your inability to make a call).

 Log in to your account > click on  the "Plan and device" tab.

Go to "Manage my services" > you have already said that Roaming is on. Check that "International call barring" is set to OFF

If not, make it so by moving the "switch".

Allow time for your account to update if you have to make a change to the settings.
(Virgin advise that this may take upto 24 hours or longer from abroad).
I would just keep turning your phone off and on again periodically to see if it will find a network and call out.

 

As for your mobile data problem. Your phone may have a switch for data roaming in the settings on the handset itself.

Possibly: Settings > More Networks > Mobile Networks > Data Roaming.

Hey Alexkid

I am having the same problem with Data roaming. Can call and text but unable to use travel pass I have bought. International call barring is off, data roaming is on (through my online account) and data roaming is on, on my mobile but nothing is happening. It is stating that my sim is unable to swap networks when I try manually. I am in Malta if that is of any use.

Any help with this would be appreciated 😁

Hi Yazz1234,

 

it sounds like you've done everything correctly (looking on Virgin's costs & coverage page it shows Vodafone Malta as their partner network).

Does the travel pass show on your account?

All I can suggest is calling the Virgin Mobile UK support line ( +447953 967 967 ) and ask if they can activate the pass for you.

No it doesnt show on my online account but when I text status, its tells me how much I have left (which is all because it's not working).
